when practicing good soil ammending, you can fit plants a bit closer in raised beds. which in turn helps block direct sunlight from reaching the soil. this keeps weeds down and improves water retention, but also makes a great habitat for slugs and snails. im using organic therimol slug pellets to help with slug numbers. the pellets are bird friendly and actually work as fertiliser if uneaten.
